Keep Cup Road Test

03-Jan-2011 By Linda
I love the idea of the keep cup, a handy biodegradable cup you can take with you to use when you buy tea or coffee instead of using disposable cups. It’s great for the environment and reduces waste.

For the last few weeks I’ve trialled the keep cup to see how it goes. The first trick with the keep cup is to actually remember to keep it with you. Sounds simple, but on several occasions, after washing out the cup at home, I simply forgot to take it with me for the day.

The second thing I found was that if you are travelling around, or grabbing your coffee on the way to work, you need to have a bag, and one big enough to put your keep cup in. I have big handbag so it was easy enough, but I did wonder how easy this would be for guys. When it came to the bag, this was my biggest problem with the keep cup. When you finish with it and, well, have to keep it, then you need to put it back in your bag. I had really hoped that modern science would be on my side, but my sneaking suspicions were right, the little dribbles of leftover coffee spilled into my handbag and spoiled a number of things. I guess I could put it in plastic bag, but well, this defeats the purpose a little!

So for people on the go, there are some hiccups. Having said that, if you love a coffee everyday and work in an office or other fixed place, then these problems simply disappear, you can keep the cup at work, wash it out and leave it on your desk ready for the next time you need a caffeine hit. Overall, I think it’s a great idea and encourage our scientists and designers to keep going to discover a cup that won’t leak in my bag!

The great thing also is the cup is manufactured in Australia and is BPA and toxic free. They are also dishwasher safe and microwaveable.
