White Rabbit Gallery Sydney

26-Oct-2010 By Simon
I’m not a big fan of contemporary works but all the art here is wonderful! It’s tucked away in Chippendale but worth hunting down and is located right near Central station so you don’t have to drive.

And the best bit it’s free! White Rabbit focuses solely on Chinese Contemporary art produced after 2000 – according to the fantastic website and the gallery has one of the largest contemporary collections of Chinese art.

There’s a real mix of media that caters for all tastes - paintings, sculpture, photos, installations and video art. I really loved the sculptures – I’m not quite sure how to describe it but as you walk in there is a giant pig car with a massive tongue that stretches nearly as long as the length of the gallery. Another highlight for me was the Scaffold, a huge wood-on-canvas structure swarming with figures made of paint squeezed straight from the tube.

All of the work is really contemporary and with some fresh and quite disturbing (some of which haunted me for a few days) works. The staff were really friendly and had great insights into each of the art works – I spent an hour with a curator who walked me through the next collection (the gallery is now closed till beginning of September when it will reopen with the new collection). You should also try some delicious Chinese tea at the tearooms on the ground floor.

Definitely worth a visit!
