When God Was A Rabbit Book Review

03-Dec-2011 By SD
“When God was a Rabbit” is a very popular book for 2011, constantly making best seller lists and gaining critical review. However the overall feeling that this book left me with was that it was a book that I should have really loved but something was missing that made me not completely bond to it. I can’t quite put my finger on what that was but somehow it fell short of the mark.

I really loved the characters, but in some ways they felt a bit clichéd – your typical quirky characters that all have a heart of gold, all misfits but they all look after each other and have this terrific bond that makes it ok that they don’t fit into society as they have each other. It just feels like I’ve read that kind of stuff so many times before. And in reality it is hard for people who are different to fit in to society.

On further thought my main criticism is of the main character. She was not developed enough. I did not know enough about her. Even though the book was divided into two parts - her as a child and her as an adult, I failed to see the difference in her from these two stages. What happened in the years in between? What about men? What about her job etc etc. There wasn’t enough to satisfy me about who she really was, which annoyed me and didn’t allow me to really connect with the book.

It was a very easy read and I finished it in a matter of days. I liked the themes of family and love but overall it felt like just another modern day quirky chick lit book that could have been so much more if it had gone a bit deeper.
