Southbank Brisbane Galleries And Museums

If you enjoy visiting galleries and museums, then you must take some time to visit Southbank in Brisbane as it contains an impressive amount of galleries that caters to all tastes and ages. And apart from paying a charge for specific visiting exhibitions, they are all free which is an added bonus.

First stop is the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) where you will see an impressive collection of modern art from both Australia and overseas. I find that I either love it or hate it with modern art – some of it seems so pointless, but maybe that in itself is the point? And I always struggle to get my head around the video installations. But mostly it delighted and entertained me, all in a spectacular building that houses the GoMA.

Next stop is the Queenland Art Gallery which is again housed in a rather impressive building with wide open spaces and an enormous interior water feature which creates an extra level of serenity to the surrounding art. I was particularly impressed by their 20th century Australian art collection and loved the magnificent furniture pieces they also had on display.

And then for something completely different, check out the Queensland Science Museum. Even though this is mostly aimed at kids, I don’t think you are ever too old to learn more about science and nature. Not to mention the fact that it brings up lots of old memories of school excursions! I particularly liked the display of real-sized animals, as sometimes it is difficult to image the size of particular species without ever actually seeing it.

Strolling along Southbank and visiting these museums and galleries is certainly an extremely pleasant way to spend your time and certainly something that can be enjoyed by all ages, and at no cost. It’s not often that you can say that!
