Life certainly has its little annoyances every now and then, so I am going to take the liberty of sharing my particular bug-bears with you from time to time.

My current one if the tunnel safety announcement that comes on nearly EVERY time I am driving through the Eastern Distributor Tunnel in Sydney on my way home from work. And I am not exaggerating. It really is nearly every time.

I like to listen to the radio when I am driving, so it is particularly annoying when this interruption comes on right when they are in the middle of something very exciting – usually a great interview, the latest news or perhaps my favourite song. It stops immediately and on comes the “Tunnel Safety Announcement” over the radio.

I would have no issue if the reason this came on is because genuinely something had happened in the tunnel, and they needed to make an urgent announcement in the interests of everyone’s safety. But no, 9 times out of 10 it is just to make some general announcement about “In the event of a breakdown” or the like.

I find it SO annoying and frustrating! It reminds me of a Big Brother type situation, where the powers that be are infiltrating your world with messages on how to live and how to think. What’s next? “Have you eaten your two serves of fruit today? If not, please pull over to the breakdown lane and someone will ensure that you meet your daily requirements?”
