Pregnancy And Exercise

26-Jun-2011 By SD
I am currently pregnant with my first child, and just into the early weeks of my second trimester. So whilst I cannot claim to be an expert in the area, I can tell you from my own experience that one of the best things that I have kept doing so far is exercise – it has been my savior in more ways than one.

As regular readers will know, I love my exercise and was pretty fit leading in to my pregnancy. And I am so glad that I was, as I think it would be too difficult and perhaps a bit risky to start exercising when you are pregnant, if it wasn’t already a regular part of your routine.

The first way that exercise has helped me is with morning sickness. There have been plenty of times that I have started my gym class or run feeling slightly queasy, but this feeling has quickly evaporated once I’ve started and has kept me feeling ok for much of the day.

Secondly, it has helped me with my overall wellbeing as I can’t deny that I have struggled with feeling larger and slower. Doing exercise always helps to minimize these feelings and it’s good to be able to get that “buzz” (as you can’t get it from a few wines anymore!!).

I’ve also found it easy to manage as your body simply doesn’t allow you to push yourself too hard, so I’ve never worried that I would harm myself or the baby in any way.

So I’m still running, still doing my spin classes and the like at the gym and I see myself being able to do this for some time – but hey, I really have no idea and I’m sure that the day will come when a walk will be more than I can take! I really am interested to see what will happen.

But one thing I do know is that as far as I can I will continue to do some form of exercise throughout my pregnancy as it has been such a great help for me.
