Petersons Chardonnay Cuvee

08-Nov-2010 By Simon
Due to taking part in Ocsober, as of 1 November I am back to one of my favourite past times – wine drinking - hooray! My first wine of the week has to be a Chardonnay. For all you Chardonnay fans you’ll know that it comes in all manners and styles, from light and breezy, to heavier and more serious. We’re so lucky in Australia to have such a wide selection there’s no need to look elsewhere.

There’s a widespread misunderstanding that all Chardonnays are oaky and buttery. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is a reason that Chardonnay is considered the greatest white grape (by many wine makers and myself) and that is because it expresses itself in a way that few other grapes can – and in the right hands it can produce wines of great beauty. Simply put, despite its bad rap in many circles, I love Chardonnay!

Petersons Chardonnay Cuvee 07/08/09 – Hunter Valley

This chardonnay is a blend of three different vintages – 2009, 2008, and 2007. Cuvée indicates a blended wine and in this case Peterson’s have especially crafted a Vintage Cuvée in order to create a Chardonnay that is a consistent, all round easy drinking style.

Many people are put off by the idea of blends however the way it has been explained to me (at Petersons) is they are using the higher quality vintages of those years and blending them to make an all round good quality wine.

I called Petersons to ask them how long I should cellar the Cuvee for – they said 3-5 years (oops! good job I got two). I’d highly recommend this wine (as I would the whole range at Petersons) – it has a lovely nose and a subtle hint of oak which is what makes this chardonnay a stand out.
