Net a Porter iPad App

02-Mar-2011 By SD
I’ve had my iPad now for over 8 months. Similar to when you receive your first smart phone, one of the first things most people do is go straight to iTunes to download a whole bunch of applications. This is primarily done to extend the functionality and enjoyment of the device.

Over time, many businesses have launched apps specifically for the iPad, but I have found that a lot of them are simply adjusted from their original iPhone format. In other words, most are only re-sized versions of the iPhone app, allowing for the iPad’s bigger screen. This is rather pointless and disappointing as most people buying an iPad would more than likely already have a smart phone.

Not so the Net-a-Porter iPad application, which in my opinion is a great example of an iPad application (and one of my favourite apps). The application is actually an online magazine that gets released every two weeks and it’s free! It takes a minute or two to download and once you have you are left with an interactive media magazine taking full advantage of all the technology that the iPad delivers.

For those of you not familiar with Net-a-Porter, it is an online women’s clothes shopping site selling some of the most exclusive brands around the world. It is an online business only and is a text-book example of how to do business online. This is extended to this application which includes all types of multimedia – videos, interactive pictures, advertising. Like a dress that you see? Simply tap on the image and immediately you can see how much it will cost, what the measurements are, and all other necessary information. You can also increase/decrease the images to examine as much detail on the item you intend to purchase as you want. Tap again, and you are taken to their site where you can purchase it. It really is impressive.

The magazine itself is full punchy articles that are easy to digest and glorious images that make you want to shop. Never more than 24 pages, it delivers the chunks of information you are after in the bite sized format that our techy savvy generation demand.

Overall the true success of this application is that it delivers a fabulous experience for customers, with a real return on investment for both buyer and seller. Beautiful but also built for business. Now that’s smart.
