Mary Poppins Review

Mary Poppins: The Musical has certainly been having a successful run in Australia. After a long season in Melbourne, it finally moved on to Sydney some time ago and has been playing to packed houses continuously. In addition to this, it won 8 gongs at this year’s Helpman Awards, so you can safely say that this production has been a local commercial and critical success.

As a big fan of musicals I was very keen to see the production. In addition to this, I grew up watching Mary Poppins (the Disney movie version) and absolutely loved it. So I was delighted to see the musical on stage last weekend and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

The production starts with a bang and the momentum does not stop from start to finish. Whilst the story is slightly different to the movie, all the big songs are included and you can’t help but sing along.

The staging, production and costumes are just outstanding and the attention to detail is fabulous. A particular stand out for me was the big song and dance number to “Step In Time”. It included some special effects that literally took my breath away!

But the real star of the show was Mary Poppins herself. It’s a hard part to play – and she (Verity Hunt-Ballard) nailed it. The rest of the cast were also first rate – especially the kids – so it was faultless in that aspect, which of course added to the high quality of the overall experience.

There is no doubt though that this production is more of a family musical. I saw Wicked a couple of years ago and that was definitely more adult in its themes and content. So if you are after something more sophisticated, then this will not be for you.

But if you are after a trip down memory lane, some great songs, amazing costumes and set designs – and an outstanding performance from Mary Poppins herself - then invest your money and buy some tickets for what will be a thoroughly entertaining couple of hours.

Mary Poppins will be showing in Sydney for a little while longer, then it is off to Brisbane!
