Lady Gaga Born This Way Review

28-May-2011 By Simon
I found myself, upon the first listen of this new album, hitting the forward button on to the next song. Many of the songs are big on production and offer little in the form of memorable, sing-a-long pop lyrics. I hope that after a few more listens my opinion will change. Maybe I am in a place with music that needs less in the way of production - take Adele for example.

I find the album a little serious because I associate Gaga with fun, danceable, sing-a-long hits. She has suddenly gone Euro-Underground with heavy 80s synths that resemble Human League and New Order (whom I love but it doesn’t seem to work here). And then add to the mix a little religious iconography and references to her idol, Madonna.

I am struggling to find one song on the album which will be an instant hit. Even the lead track, "Born this Way" has taken some time to grow on me. And "Judas" - while appropriate for club land with its driving baseline - is difficult to sing along to.

My favorite song is "Government Hooker" - it contains a little bit of that original Gaga sassiness and would play well in the clubs.

I'm afraid to say it but I feel that Lady Gaga is experimenting here just to say to the world, “I've made it and I can do what I want” - perhaps at the expense of losing a certain fans.

What do you think?
