Key Fashion Trends For Autumn

14-Feb-2011 By SD
I love a change of season and I love adapting my wardrobe accordingly. After a very long and hot summer, I’m looking forward to getting out of my tank tops and shorts and into some more substantial clothing. So what are the key trends for autumn? Here’s my summary from what I’ve seen so far:

Military

Does military ever really go out of fashion? It certainly is one trend that seems to stand the test of time, which says to me that it is worth investing in key pieces as you will get your money’s worth. My tips? Well fitted cargo style pants and a military inspired jacket.

Mad-Men Inspired

Lady-like 1950’s fashion is back in a big way. Think dresses cinched in at the waist, floral patterns, bright colours. Go back in time to Dior’s “New Look” to get some inspiration and bring out your feminine side.

Lace

A strong trend from the 90’s, lace is finding its way into many pieces this autumn and is one way that designers are looking to spruce up a simple black outfit. My tip is that lace should either be black or white, no other colours allowed (unless you are under 25 and heading to a music festival). Keep it simple and understated as lace can easily look cheap and tacky. I’m currently searching for the perfect white lace top as I feel it will update my blank pants/jacket combination for work in a very nice way.

Animal

It’s a jungle out there, so let fashion imitate life and add a few key animal pieces to your wardrobe. In my opinion this trend is best kept to accessories – bags, jewelry or shoes – to avoid looking like mutton dressed as lamb (or cougar).

Fur/Shearling

Probably a trend that will work better in the winter months due to our temperate climate, be prepared to get your shag on as I keep seeing this trend everywhere. Again my tips are to keep it simple and confine it to a few key pieces: a gilet, detailing on shoes or a jacket. And no more than one fur/shearling piece at a time unless you really are about to fly a jet-fighter plane or pop down to Antarctica.
