Forget Body Mass Index

Forget the BMI, have you ever wondered exactly what your ideal body weight is?

I know there is that BMI out there, but according to that scale I am nearly obese which I know is not true. And when I heard that this is the same for Brad Pitt and George Clooney I was considerably consoled!

I often find it very hard when discussing my weight with friends as I sometimes hear what some people weigh (which is significantly less than me) and see those pictures in the magazine as they declare “Half their size!!” and I wonder where all those extra kilos are on me – am I just deluding myself? Am I actually really fat but not somehow seeing it? Am I kidding myself when I keep blaming it on my “big bones”? I want to know when I step on the scales, what weight should I be aiming for?

What is the correct body weight for ME? Through a friend, I heard about a place that takes a scan of your body (DEXA Scan) to tell you this information and more - bone size, body fat %, muscle mass. And from all of this information they can give you a range of where your ideal weight is (within 3 kilos). So I went along a little while ago and it has probably been the best $100 I’ve spent in a long time as it gave me what I needed – cold hard facts that are relevant to me and me only.

It did confirm what I have always thought – I do have big bones, they are 1 ½ times more than the average woman! And my ideal body weight range was where I thought it should be. It doesn’t mean that I don’t have some kilos to shift – but at least now I know where I should be heading.
So if this is something that has been an issue with you, I’d highly recommend you taking the time to do this. It only takes 30 minutes and it includes a summary by the practitioner on your results. You can do a shorter option (just the scan, no consultation) or a longer one where the doctor discusses diet plans etc.
Here is where I went in Sydney, and I’m not sure if there are others around the country.

    5 out of 5 stars
It's great to see i'm not the only person that went through a similar thing. I eat healthy, I exercise and a year ago when I was seeing a personal trainer at a gym, he read my BMI and basically said I was over weight. What it did do though is show me how to reduce my portion sizes and over a period of 8 months I lost 6 kilos !!!!!!
