Eating In Greece A Culinary Delight

One of the great pleasures of travel is the experiencing the food that your choice of destination has to offer.

Now from some places – like England – it is not necessarily something that stands out as one of the main attractions of visiting the place. And sometimes you can also be pleasantly surprised – like I was on a recent trip to Greece. I have always liked Greek food – well what I knew of it at least… Greek Salad, Mousaka, Haloumi Cheese. It was the type of food that I would eat occasionally at home as I can’t say that I am aware of that many good Greek restaurants around Sydney (and am happy to be told otherwise).

But I was not prepared for how good the food in Greece actually was. We were there for just under two weeks and I can only recall eating a couple of meals that I felt were” just ok”. The rest were delicious, if not outstanding and I did not tire of eating Greek food the whole time we were there.

On a typical day breakfast would be Greek yoghurt drizzled with honey, lunch would be a Greek Salad with Pita Bread and dinner would be anything like a Souvlaki to a Mousaka to beautiful Greek lamb.

If you are in Athens and you are after the most delicious, well priced Souvlaki, under the shadow of the Acropolis, you have to check Thanassis (we ended up eating here nearly every day!)

Or if you are after amazing food in a breathtaking location (Santorini), then you can’t go wrong by visiting Ambrosia & Nectar

My mouth waters just thinking about them again… Anyone have any recommendations for great Greek cuisine in Australia?
