Camping At Treachery Beach

31-Jan-2011 By Simon
One of my all time favourite camping spots is Camp Treachery (about 4 hours north of Sydney) which offers bush camping near Seal Rocks. The camp has all the basic creature comforts (hot showers and flushing toilets never looked so good) and no mobile phone reception. This is a place for the hardcore camper.

I recently spent five glorious days at Treachery Beach with three close friends. I have been camping with Nicola, Julian and Lim before all of who are pros at it (they even brought a dustpan and brush to keep the camp area tidy) – it really makes the difference when you are with people who know what they are doing.

Camp Treachery is a wonderful place for kids and adults alike; a massive sand-dune that is a cheap version of a Stairmaster, a beautiful long white sandy beach (once you managed to trek over the sand dunes) which has no road access so is mostly empty and perfect waves for boogie boarding (though no lifeguards so you do need to be very careful).

During our time there, a number of mobile vans showed up in the campsite including my all time favourite childhood moment; the ice cream van. We also had a fresh fruit and vegetable van and milk van show up (at least we think it was a milk van…something was making a “mooing” sound every morning).

The camp is full of amazing wildlife including dingos (which were happy to run around the camps), huge goannas that were often found sunning themselves in trees, brush turkeys and brazen possums.

I have to say some of the highlights of the trips was toasting marshmallows and finding kindling to start the camp fire, chasing the waves on the beach, reading in my hammock, playing endless games of cards and trying to work out which stars were what!
