By Nightfall Book Review

24-Jul-2011 By Simon
This is a beautifully written book, so beautiful you just want to immerse yourself in it and in many ways I still am. In a short 238 pages, Cunningham crafts a wonderfully articulated story that captures any reader who appreciates the English language. His superbly written sentences and choice of words are uncompromising and beautiful.

Only Michael Cunningham can write a beautifully crafted story with so little plot and pretentious characters and still manage to make me savor every delicious line. There are far too many to share in this book.

In the book Cunningham concentrates on the disillusionment that life brings to individuals over time. The book illustrates how people are always looking for something new and different to what life has brought them at any particular point in time, but especially in the throws of middle age. For example, as Cunningham so brilliantly says, "Time robs us and robs us and when we beg for mercy, it robs us some more."

Cunningham’s talents lie in his ability to uniquely describe people and places with details that are often in the back of the human mind, but for some reason lie in the empty spaces waiting for his pen to hit paper.

Days after reading I am in awe of his talent because, unlike most literary writers, he is able to hold interest and move the plot without getting lost in his own proses (or when he does, I'm right there with him).

A perfect book!
