Amazon Kindle

How do we now judge a book by its cover?

Over the past couple of years e-books have entered many bedrooms for late night reading. On hearing about the likes of Amazon Kindle– I thought that this fad would never take off but stats clearly show the rise and rise of people using such technology to get their literary fix.

I thought I’d try out the Kindle to see if the good old paperback is in trouble. Okay, so here it goes. You get this new shiny box in the mail, it’s from Amazon - at first glance this eBook reader may not seem like anything special, however I soon found out that it was.

There are a few features that I really like about the kindle, so here’s my list:

• Simple to use and with the wireless access for buying books is so easy

• Read-out-loud feature allows me to stay with the action even when I’m doing something else

• I can read all night (for 4 – 5 days in a row) without killing the battery. To accomplish this I do turn the wireless off (wireless access is a battery killer)

• The big page turning buttons make it simple to read with

• It actually learns what you enjoy reading, makes book recommendations based upon that, and so far the recommendations have been good ones

• Amazon’s pre-order feature allows you to order books by your favourite authors when I find out they are being released, and they automatically download to my kindle on the release date.

A couple of recommendations I do have if you are thinking of buying one: get a clip on light to make it easy to read in the dark, and be sure to get a case for it. The protective case is an excellent tool when you accidentally drop it (and yes I did this). Other than that I would recommend the Kindle to anyone who enjoys reading.

Another thing you’ll find great about the Kindle is the huge number of books available for it which I believe is a big negative for the ipad ebook system which has very few books available to buy. All in all I do enjoy reading on the Kindle however I must say that I much prefer the paper back versions. There’s something about holding a book and the smell of the pages that will never become outdated.
